I have been using my link to MYDXC for some time to test that my xr32 is actually working! Now I can access your BBS.
I have changed the IPLINK setting to the new correct value, and it appears to have made no difference. I could access your DX server and BBS before the change, virtually instantly.
My link to HART for some reason, wont work, so I will need to investigate.

Hello Duncan
if you manage a connection to g7vja-5 xr2 from your linux xr32
leave a message on my PMS.
just type in pms when connected.
/ex to end the message
then i will try and connect to your xr32 and leave a PMS message for you.

Hi Kenny,
I 've not found a solution to:
XROUTER.CFG: ERROR in line 439 - Proto 1 socket creation error 1044.
Press a key to exit...

line 439 is a red herring, it is whatever the last line in xrouter.cfg happens to be. If I remove another line, it would be 438

I get the error report when I unhash  IPADDRESS=44.131.255.164 in my xrouter.cfg -
obviosly has something to do with the creation of a TCP/IP socket for TCP/IP traffic.

When I hash my ipaddress xr32 boots to the usual screens

Something else too:
When xr32 is running on the Nodes screen ~99 G7VJA-5
                                                        ~22 G4MKI-8
where/why they are creeping in is a mystery as port 22 is GB7CIP-5
and Port 99 is feedback port.
The above all refers to the Ubuntu version.

Hi Duncan just found this little news
are you glad you wont be able to see it.

The title of Britain’s tallest building could be taken by a massive communication tower – in Dover.

Plans have been lodged to build the giant 1,049ft mast that will be able to be seen from mainland Europe.

The proposed construction site is at an old power station near the town of Sandwich, Kent, near the White Cliffs of Dove

GM Kenny,
My boot loader GRUB decided to give up the ghost.
I have had to re-install Mint, which is now running and all the xr32 backup files.
For the moment, 'work in progress'. I have shut down the windows ver of xr32 to change my router ports

Hi Duncan
From the RSGB Website
rsgb | January 8, 2016

The Amateur Radio Observation Service, in conjunction with the Emerging Technology Coordination Committee, has noted a number of examples of UK amateurs operating internet linked nodes that are carrying third party traffic.

They would like to draw attention to the requirement for an NoV to the amateur’s licence under these circumstances.

Guidance for the use of personal hotspots, crossband repeaters or other similar installations can be found in Section 10 of the Amateur licence which is reproduced below with the appropriate parts highlighted:

10 Unattended and remote control operation

10(1) The Licensee may conduct Unattended Operation of Radio Equipment provided that any such operation is consistent with the terms of this Licence. Additional restrictions which apply to the Unattended Operation of Beacons are specified in Schedule 2 to this Licence.

10(3) This Clause 10 does not permit the Licensee to install Radio Equipment capable of Remote Control Operation for general unsupervised use by other Amateurs.

10(4) Any communication links used to control the Radio Equipment or to carry Messages to or from the Radio Equipment in accordance with Clause 10(2) must be adequately secure so as to ensure compliance with Clause 3 of this Licence. Any security measures must be consistent with Clause 11(2) of this Licence.

Our interpretation of this (without prejudice) is that the use of personal Hotspots et cetera is legal provided that they are for personal use only and not open for others to use. If the installation is open and carrying third party traffic then it will be considered as a repeater or gateway and will need a Notice of Variation (NoV) to your licence. NoVs will only be issued to Full Licensees in the case of repeaters and to Full Licensees and Intermediates in respect of Gateways and can be applied for at no cost through the ETCC website

Hi Kenny,
Are they having a go about people like me running Briary without an NoV, or, shooting themselves in the foot about potential abuse of remote shutdown procedures?

In the case of the former, I am not running a node which is gating to RF....in any event, if I turn the APRS beacons off, nobody would be any the wiser.

If they want this to be understood, they need to translate it, with some practical examples, perhaps further comment on this will be published in February RadCom, unless I missed it in the January edition.

RSGB need to give examples as to what third party traffic are there refering too
Steve Morton monitors Aprs so he is more than likely behind the RSGB message.
I dont do Radcom anymore,i found the RSGB is not supporting the hobby as it use too, they seem to me to just be lackies for Ofcom, yes sir no sir.
to date i still have not seen any Ofcom publication about remote shutdown being part of the NoV Application process.
if they have scrapped the idea, then they owe me £39.00 for my system i installed or i could not get my NoVs renewed, same for Paul G4APL who run GB7CIP who was told the say as myself.

had a couple of powercuts this morning, think i have it all back on again

i can still connect to http://g4mki.no-ip.org/ webpage ,though they shut that one down??

Re: General Chat

Post by g4mki on Sun Jan 10, 2016 4:44 pm

Hi Kenny,
You are obviously wondering exactly what is going on, as am I. It seems all rather vague to me.
I was thinking of buying a GSM switch next month. I only need something simple to switch off 1 pi...I saw something on Ebay for about £14 which would probably do the job...further homework required! I don't want another row with Steve next time I renew.
There is another issue which comes to mind and that is potential risk of access to our nodes through BPQ web pages...possibly another nail in the datamodes coffin.
As for g4mki.no-ip.org, mb7uek.no-ip.org and gb7mki.no-ip.org, they run on ports 80,81 and 82 respectively...all are active now. The message I had from no-ip affected all of them, but they only blocked g4mki.no-ip.org:80

Although I am running dbray.no-ip.org on port 83, I can only access it as localhost:83 in Mint.
If I could 'see' all of my computers on my home network, including Mint, I could redirect the xr32 pages to another host, and give you a link to them. I can't connect to dbray.no-ip.org:83 (or port anything else), so either no-ip are blocking as I am running 4 hosts ( the max used to be 3, but they seem to have allowed it..when I set it up, their website said it would be active within 1 minute)

I am still trying to sort out Samba in Mint...unfortunately, it seems a little more
complicated than Samba in Ubuntu Mint (new pi) or Raspian Samba.
I've got some Samba installation notes for Ubuntu which may throw some light on where I am going wrong. There seems to be very little information on the internat on running Samba in Linux Mint 17, and I am not an experienced linux user, so I haven't much to go on.

Hi Duncan
What are you using Samba for,i have never used it,so you are one up on me
i will look samba up.
My GSM unit is a SC1-GSM from new cost £39.00 plus one pound for a micro sd card for the unit which i setup with £10.00 credit on my main mobile phone then i put the Micro sd card in the unit ,.job done
i can now switch off all my power supplies via my mobile using a short shutdown command via a SMS text message, all of my keyholders have the phone code to switch it off if Ofcom should request it too be done.

re your g4mki.no-ip address i can still view G4MKI Web Server ,so it must be working.

your port81 is a default page for a Apache server
and port 82 is you GB7MKI Pi Server pages

re The Ofcom letter in the earlier message, they need to give some examples.
if i posted there letter on the APRSUK Yahoo site,Steve Morton would soon rear his head up with a comment.
Bpq i would not worry about that, feels like Ofcom would like to bang a big nail through the whole of the DataModes.

Hi Kenny,
Try this:    http://mb7uek.no-ip.org:1040
APRS pages for BRIARY....the pages for HMPTON are on gb7mki.no-ip.org.....One pi + apache for BRIARY, a second pi + apache for HMPTON. ( both with pitnc's attached) My new pi hosts the main G4MKI Webpages, which links to the others. Makes life a bit of a pain if any one of them goes down, and gives me a bit of a headache assigning ports on the router.

Last night, I went through Samba and all my USERS on all linux machines to check usernames, passwords and access rights, because I thought I'd got some passwords wrong. In the event, the problem may have been with access rights.
At one point, the entire network appeared in Mint and I was able to access folders/files on all machines, except one...the new Pi which now supports my main website. In an attempt to sort that out, I lost access to the network again on Mint...it is still a work in progress but at least I am getting there.

In everything I have read, it is the settings in the samba (/etc/samba/smb.conf file) which set the parameters for windows shares

I am toying with the idea of running 3 hosts instead of 4, which will involve moving lots of folders from a > b etc, but I need to
'see' my network in Mint before hand.

Re: General Chat

Hi Kenny,
All the BPQ/XR32 links were on this page:

http://g4mki.no-ip.org/info2.php

If dbray.no-ip.org would run, the link to my xr32 web pages would work, the page, which is hosted by g4mki.no-ip.org links pages generated by both old pi's.

g4mki.no-ip.org was originally running on the old WinXP pc, now deceased, so I copied it all to gb7mki.no-ip org on one of the pi's and eventually moved it to the new pi B..the version of the site running as gb7mki.no-ip.org had the page heading changed on index.php but is otherwise the same as g4mki.no-ip.org..I just haven't bothered to update it. I could shut that pi down, I would lose G4MKI-3:HMPTON node and the backup pages it provides.

Hi Duncan
The link to info2.php works ok
your Aprs page load ok
your Webmail loads ok
and the node page was ok,although i cannot login in without a password.

on your Aprs page station list ,MB7URP & MB7UKS-1 are both Expired Callsigns.more for you to try and block.

too many expired ones still being used,
time Ofcom - RSGB-ETCC got of there backsides and started to clean up the Data modes.

Kenny,
Thanks for the information on my links page and MB7URP/GB7UKS.

I have decided to copy /var/www/ (complete) from my Ubuntu Mate (pi B )to my 16GB memory stick, and then to Mint...Mint will then the host g4mki.no-ip.org...that will save me changing the older pi's..BRIARY & HMPTON will be unaffected. I can make all those changes and get my xr32 web pages online quite quickly...I will simply be moving files for the moment. I should then be able to use localhost on Mint to review what is going on. By the same token, with all the files saved on a memory stick, another grub failure will allow me to re-install Mint as the only operating system on the dual boot pc.(I have also copied the latest xr32 files, as the system is running now , to memory stick.

Thanks Kenny,
Thanks too for the message from T2England re: MB7UEK. I have been too pre-occupied with Mint to have noticed that it wasn't online. I have now rebooted the pi and checked to make sure I am connected using the link in your email Very Happy .
( I probably annoyed it using the Connect to Server facility in Mint and Ubuntu Mint.   Embarassed

I have copied the contents of the www directory on g4mki.no-ip.org to the corresponding folder in Mint.

I was called into the docs after a routine blood test last week...my blood glucose is getting too high for his comfort, and as he put it, diabetes is irreversible, although not a particular problem.
Loose 2 stone and go for a brisk 20 minute walk,3 times a week was his prognosis. So---every morning when I get up its 2 miles on the exercise bike, and a return visit to the docs in 6 months..The good news was that my cholesterol is still around 3.6.
Looks as though more sweat over windmill shutter repairs in the garage might have to replace sitting in front of my computer for so long! I've got 6 for major repair/rebuild before Easter.
I would cycle up to the Windmill every week, but she who has to be obeyed thinks that is far too dangerous on the country roads around here. Its about three mile away, and like all windmills, its on top of a very steep hill!

Hi Kenny,
I can't complain really, I am wearing pretty well. My arthritis is very mild and confined mainly to my neck, apart from that BP/cholesterol are well controlled by tablets.
The xyl suffers far more than I do, with arthritis confined mainly to her lower back. She has bad days when walking around the shops becomes difficult.

The website move to Mint seems to have been successful. I can connect to my main site using localhost:83 and my xr32 pages using localhost:8016

All that is needed now is to take the plunge and change the router ports around ,rename a computer and close dbray.no-ip .org on the noip site.
