Hello Duncan
today i tried to photograph a Jenny Wren that keeps hopping along my back fence near to the bird feeders i have put out,if it had stopped still long enough i would have snapped it,
my back fence is 60 ft wide and the Jenny runs from one end to the other.

and like you, about a month or so ago i had a kingfisher on the bird box
it was hanging on to the bird feeder and i did not have my camera to hand.
so now my camera is left near the patio doors. Ready and waiting..

Hello Kenny,
My xyl does that...keeps her camera and a pair of binoculars in the kitchen, just in case!
My daughter bought Carol (xyl) a BirdCam for Christmas..it is now mounted on a wooden post about 6 feet from the cluster of bird feeders she has hanging in a tree in front of the kitchen window. It seems to be taking about 200 pictures a day, now that I have worked out how to set it up, which it saves on a 16GB SD card. Carol was hoping to get some shots of the woodpecker which obviously decided that it wasn't going to have its picture taken. For some reason, we have been in this house since 1982 and only twice in that time have we had a woodpecker coming to visit. Now and then a sparrow hawk pays us a visit, but generally we seem to feed umpteen starlings, wood pigeons, sparrows, 2 pairs of blackbirds and our resident sparrow. Blue tits, great tits, goldfinches are frequent visitors as well.

Back to the weather station, G3OJZ, down in Folkestone takes weather recording very seriously and uses a Davis Vantage Pro, but that is a tad too pricy for me.
An amateur over in Upminster, who says he calibrates his instruments to Met standards also has a Boltek lightning detector which seems to give good coverage in this area.  If I wanted to take it that seriously, I would contact the Met Office, become an 'official' weather observer and let them provide the equipment!
All my WX stations to date have been Oregon Scientific, and I've just opened a page on my laptop:
https://www.weathershop.co.uk/shop/oregon-scientific-wmr86-weather-station-1 - which is the updated version of my WMR100 at £99.95. That is likely to be my next buy. It isn't too obvious from the illustrations how I would mount it up a pole, but I will investigate further. In the past, Weather Shop have been able to supply spares, but only for current models.

Kenny,
I didn't read the spec properly. The WMR86 has no pc connectivity, so it wont do!

Hello Duncan
I like the idea of a birdcam, little bit pricey but quess it would be good to see the photos and what the camera has caught during the day.
I have a carcam that sticks on the windscreen, i could use that,it has a 32Gb sd card and i run it on a top up battery pack that is meant for mobile phones
it records up to a 1.9Gb movie file then resets and starts to record another 1.9Gb movie which runs for about 25 minutes viewing time and will keep going until the sd card is full.

that last link you put on,the item does not do PC and is battery only

Hello kenny,
I will have to review, very carefully, the weather station specs before I commit to buy one.
My existing WMR100 runs on AA batteries, but they last about a year before changing. At the moment my software is telling me it is time to renew them.

It is more difficult to find a weather station which is solar powered, but even then they must have a backup rechargeable battery. If my B&Q solar powered garden lights are anything to go by they can only be guaranteed to run for one season without having to change the rechargeables.

Well we didn't pay for the BirdCam, daughter asked xyl what she wanted for Christmas and tongue in cheek, xyl suggested a few possibilities. I think it was Julia's (daughter) idea of payback time as she bought me a hudl the Christmas before. My daughter is doing very well, and her other half globetrots (sometimes with Julia) for his company. Both of them have good jobs and Julia has been over to the USA several times for her company..New York and Boston. (but she won't fly long distance any more as she had a deep vein thrombosis scare a couple of years ago)...

Duncan
the foreign stations seem to send any old pictures most are ok,but some are very near the mark.
I must clear out my laptop as i have hundreds that i have received
Easypal stores them in the RX folder and it can get quite large
i have a folder on my BBS Pc which is used for 7plus decoded packet pictures
i may start one for received Easypal pictures, save just deleting them.
Italians are splattering all over 7.055 & 7.058

Hi Kenny,
Thanks for the link to your SSTV pics.
I will have to make up a set of decent pics to transfer to my EasyPal TX directory.
One of the things which suprised me was the technical quality of the pictures I received. I watched the first 2 or 3 appear on the screen and then got on with doing something else!

Hi Kenny,

Just seen this on the Essex Ham site:

RadCom February 2016 Issue:

This is the second issue to be published with the new look format, which seems to have been generally well-received.

In the main news section of the next Radcom: An important note about Internet Gateways and Wires-X Nodes operating against the NoV terms..........

That's all it says.

Hi Duncan
been trying to get my friend Don G0RQL web pages setup at his Qth
got it working ok on Apache with php, just have to wait for the DNS to catch up
with his new address G0RQL.UK which he wants to run from home like i do.
his CO.UK  website is still working,
trouble is i cannot access the files on his PC via the FTP server i installed on his WinXP PC
time to put on my thinking cap.  scratch

is that all the Radcom says
"An important note about Internet Gateways and Wires-X Nodes operating against the NoV terms."
the letter is on the Ofcom site, but as you know by the copy i posted on here.
Ofcom or RSGB dont seem to say what is against the NoV terms.
i think it has something to do with Beacons.
i also posted a copy of the Ofcom letter on the Yahoo APRSUK site,
no one may any comments about it.
is it a case of dont care what Ofcom says,we do what we want.

Data mode NoV's are all screwed up
Keith G1GXB has let his NoV expire (Nov 2015)for GB7SOU, but he is still using the callsign.
maybe an email to Steve Morton who may shed some light as to the Ofcom
NoV terms letter...

other thing i wanted to mention
on your xr32 stats on the "About" page you have reference to WinXP,service pack 3 etc and the linux version of XR32
is your XR32 running on WinXP or Linux Mint??

Hi Kenny,
My xr32 is running on Mint...I thought I had gone through all the pages in the http folder changing the references from WinXP to Mint 17.3 Rosa.
I must have missed something!
It is definitely running on 64-bit Mint.

I don't know when the Feb edition of RadCom will drop through my letterbox, It can't be far away. As the reference was so brief in the comment I saw it is probably a lot of fuss about nothing...and as neither Ofcom nor the RSGB seem to be doing much about the operational but expired NoV's, it would be reasonable to ignore it! (and them).

Re: General Chat

Post by g4mki on Wed Jan 20, 2016 8:07 pm

Thanks Kenny,
I had edited the about.htm file in /home/xr32/http but not the file in /var/www/.
It has now been corrected.
I made 2 changes after I installed xr32 in Mint...the http path in xrouter.cfg and later still, changed the apache directory from /var/www/html to /var/www when I found that weewx uses the latter as its http root.
I have saved the xrouter.cfg and iproute.sys files out of harms way, but not the whole xr32 directory.

On a slightly different tack.
All my network machines now show on the Mint File Manager network screen, and I can access them using the Connect to server tab in file manager's File Menu, using SSH or windows shares...but I still have a problem automatically moving files from my old windows server to Mint... to a 'shared' directory or not. The files and directory concerned all have read/write permissions and are not owned by root.
I must be missing something but can't put my finger on it.
It's a bit academic really as it only affects my weather page(s).

can you login to my other Datamode (no adverts) site that i have been trying out
http://datamodes.free-forum.net
and if you could leave me a message or two about nothing special
there seems to be a problem with the user permissions

OK Kenny,
Testing the other Datamodes site...unfortunately it is telling me I have an incorrect username..
I'm good at mistyping things too....too often for it to be a senior moment affraid

I like that smiley...makes me laugh!

I thought the miss-typing problem was being caused by low batteries as they had been in use since last Christmas, or moving the keyboard too far from the USB wireless device...but having just replaced the batteries and moved the keyboard a little closer to the pc, I have to report that the mistakes are still happening affraid

user permissions seem to be the fault with the new forum, but there

once i find how to set the users permissiom to work properly.

OK Kenny,
I have just followed the link on the email. got to the site OK, used g4mki as username and the same password I used to login here and it would not let me in.
I actually tried p/w duncan after several attempt using the proper one, so may have been kicked out for that reason. p/w was: 2106rsab,,,which is part of my D.O.B and Post Code!
I'll try again with p/w duncan and see what happens

Hi Duncan
Forget the other forum for now, they have not fixed the User permission problem
so we will stick too this one for now.

Read your note on the Yahoo APRSUK group
you had more replies back than i got..hi
that M0PZU is ex RSGB thinks he has all the answers
going by all the expired callsigns being used still (AROS) are not doing a very good job in reporting them,so much for self Policing,
